An invitation to our Sustainable Communities Open DayWe are inviting all housing associations, local authorities and community organisations in the region to a Sustainable Communities Open Day. It is an opportunity to share information and identify the potential demand for a sustainable communities foundation degree at Southampton Solent University.

The event is aimed at employers, prospective students, community organisations and practitioners.

Southampton Solent University, supported by the Academy for Sustainable Communities, is seeking to establish the demand for a foundation degree in sustainable communities to run from October 2009.

To support this process, we are holding an open day on 15 July 2008, at 10.30am in Solent Lecture Theatre at Southampton Solent University.

Open day programme

10.30am: Registration and coffee

11.00am: Skills for sustainable communities - the role of higher education
Introduction - Bob Keats, Course Leader, Southampton Solent University
The role of the Academy for Sustainable Communities - Glen Gidley, Academy for Sustainable Communities

11.45am: Questions

12.00pm: Planning and design for sustainability - Paul Grover, Solent Centre for Architecture

12.45pm: Buffet lunch and networking

1.30pm: Community perspectives on sustainability - Peter Hopkins, Isle of Wight Council; Cheryl Snudden, Pan Neighbourhood Partnership and Debbie King, New Deal for Thornhill

2.15pm: Questions

2.30pm: The course curriculum, an opportunity for employers' input by creating a 'sounding board group' - Bob Keats, Southampton Solent University

2.45pm: Foundation degree issues for employers - Glen Gidley, Academy for Sustainable Communities

Followed by tea and the opportunity for more networking and questions
