South East Eye - July 2008
Steve Benson, Managing Director of Testway Housing, was welcomed as the new Chartered Institute of Housing President in June - the first president from the South East region since John Bennett in 1993.
An invitation to our Sustainable Communities Open Day
We are inviting all housing associations, local authorities and community organisations in the region to a Sustainable Communities Open Day. It is an opportunity to share information and identify the potential demand for a sustainable communities foundation degree at Southampton Solent University.
The South East Excellence Awards winners
This year the Chartered Institute of Housing South East introduced the South East Excellence Awards to reward individual effort, recognise good practice and promote role models in housing. Branch chair, Graham Maunders, said, 'We recognise that the work of individuals makes a significant contribution to people's lives in the region. Through these awards, we are able to highlight the substantial difference they can and do make.'
CIH Good Practice Guide on Worklessness - can you help?
The Chartered Institute of Housing is currently developing a Good Practice Guide on Worklessness. As part of its development, CIH is currently looking for examples of housing providers carrying out effective projects to tackle worklessness in the South East. Can you help?
Here in the South East region, we are keen to engage and update you, our members, on a variety of issues - policy, international visits, events and any other new developments. And, as we very much welcome your views and feedback, we have developed a new interactive way of helping - a web-based discussion forum called Moodle.
Places available on our study visit to Denmark and Sweden
We have been working closely with Claus Bech-Hansen, CIH South East friend and colleague from Copenhagen, to put together an exciting, interesting and thought-provoking programme for a housing study visit to Denmark and Sweden. After previous successful visits, this trip focuses on looking at developments at the cutting edge of innovation and sustainability.
Delivering environmental sustainability
Jonathan Smales, who has been working on sustainability for over 20 years, describes himself as an old-fashioned environmentalist. 'At Greenpeace we introduced our first climate change campaign in 1987. What we were saying then, the world's leaders and scientists are saying now. But what have we achieved since then?' Read about Jonathan's keynote presentation at the last Chartered Institute of Housing South East conference.
